What kind of animals are on the farm?

At Lagom Farm we focus on breeding and raising rare breed poultry, Dual Purpose/Heritage breeds, Blue/Green Egg Layers, and Silkies. Although no bird is perfect, we strive to breed according to the Standard of Perfection (SOP). The Rare/Dual Purpose/Heritage breeds that are not yet accepted by the American Poultry Association are bred according to the standard in the country from which they originate.

What do you feed your animals?

Our Idaho Pasture Pigs are fed No Soy, Non-GMO feed. Our chickens are fed Organic Non-GMO feed. All of our animals are allowed to free range as much as possible allowing for their safety. We believe a pig should be a pig, and a chicken should be a chicken- with lots of cuddles in between :)

Are you a hatchery?

Hatcheries are an important part of poultry farming. However, we are not a hatchery. You will see many of our available breeds may say "Out of stock".  We are constantly working to improve our lines according to the Standards of Perfection. This involves constantly examining our breeds for improvements.  Hens also need time to rest so they are able to grow healthy chicks. Many breeds are available. Call us to find out more!

Do you sell Hatching Eggs?

We do not like to sell hatching eggs because shipping, delivery, and handling causes stress on the fertile eggs. We prefer to sell chicks to make sure your chicks are alive and healthy before you get them!  Local pick up is available.  We do not offer shipping at this time.  If you are a local school or looking to hatch for a school project, we would be happy to help!

Things to know before purchasing Chicks from Lagom Farm

Chicks needs special care. They require necessary equipment and food to allow them to grow big and strong.

1. Brooder with heat.  We use heat plates and heat emitters

2. A thermometer under the heat is essential for their survival

chicks hatch (day old)-one week 95 degrees

1-2 weeks 90 degrees

2-3 weeks 85 degrees

3-4 weeks 80 degrees

4-5 weeks 75 degrees

3.  Food and clean water. We grind our food to make it smaller for the chicks to eat. Use a coffee grinder or food processor :)

4. Large Flake Pine shavings for clean bedding. Change frequently

5. After 6-8 weeks they are free to go outside into a protective environment and coop!  Watch them grow.  Predators are real and very deadly to your flock!!  Predators are in the air and on the ground.  There are lots of websites to get more information on how to keep your poultry safe and happy :)

*watch for pasty butt! This is when their droppings cake onto the vent causing a potentially deadly blockage.  Wash the chicks vent under warm water to release and clean the vent when needed.  Do not let the chick get cold.

** OUTSIDE TIME

When it is above 70 degrees outdoors, you may give your chicks some outside time. Once the chicks are 3-4 weeks old, they are ready to play outside for shorts periods of time :)  This will give them a chance to scratch in the dirt and take dirt baths.  You can also give then some time in the sun by placing them into a playpen.

*** Begin to familiarize yourself with common chick illnesses such as coccidiosis!  Be prepared as this is very common.
